Licensed Virginia architects are required to complete 16 hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.
- CE Requirement: 16 Continuing Education (CE) hours in the 2 year period prior to the renewal date (See below).
- Renewal Date: Licenses expire on the last day of the initial month of licensure. (i.e. If you received licensure in November 2020, your renewal day is November 30, 2022).
- CE Reporting Cycle: Biennial - Credits must be earned within the 2-year cycle between renewals, beginning the day after renewal to the next renewal period.(i.e. If your renewal date is September 30, 2021, the next reporting cycle begins October 1, 2021 and ends September 30, 2023).
- Acceptable Coursework: The Virginia Board for Architects, Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, Certified Interior Designers and Landscape Architects (APELSCIDLA) does not pre-approve courses or providers. AIA-approved courses are generally acceptable. It is the registrant's responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria - as summarized on their website. Final discretion is up to the board.
- Reporting of Credits: Licensees are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the biennial renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
- Tracking of Credits: Records of successful completion of continuing education should be kept for at least 4 years following the license renewal for which credits were claimed.
- Audit: All architects licensed in Virginia are subject to audit by the Board and upon written request will need to provide documentation to support the CE hours claimed at renewal.
- Carry-over Credits: Not permitted.
