South Dakota Architect Continuing Education Requirements
Cindy Grant, Aug 23, 2021 2:12:31 PM
Licensed South Dakota architects are required to complete 30 hours of continuing education every 2 years.
- CE Requirement: 30 Professional Development Hours (PDH) every two year period. At least 20 of the required 30 PDHs must qualify as Technical/Health, Safety and Welfare (HSW) credits. Up to 10 PDHs may be in professional management subjects (i.e. business practice).
- Renewal Date: Licenses expire every two years, based on the initial licensure date. (i.e. If your initial licensure date was in December 2019, then your renewal day is December 31, 2021).
- CE Reporting Cycle: Biennial - Credits must be earned within the 2-year cycle between renewals, beginning the day after renewal to the next renewal period. (i.e. If your renewal date is September 30, 2021, the next reporting cycle begins October 1, 2021 and ends September 30, 2023).
- Acceptable Coursework: The South Dakota Board of Technical Professions does not pre-approve courses or providers. AIA-approved courses are generally acceptable but it is the registrant's responsibility to use his/her professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post as detailed on Board's website. Final discretion is up to the board.
- Reporting of Credits: Licensees are required to submit a PDH log to document compliance with the Board’s continuing education requirements on the biennial renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
- Tracking of Credits: Records of successful completion of continuing education should be kept for at least four years following the license renewal for which credits were claimed. Architects must use the PDH log to track, record, and submit CE hours.
- Audit: All architects licensed in South Dakota are subject to audit by the Board and upon written request will need to provide documentation to support PDHs claimed at renewal.
- Carry-over Credits: A maximum of 15 PDHs may be transferred to the next biennium period.
