Illinois State Seal Continuing EducationLicensed Illinois architects are required to complete 24 hours of Continuing Education every 2 years. 16 must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare.

  • CE Requirement:  24 hours of Continuing Education, of which at least 16 must address Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) issues AND must be earned in a structured setting (e.g. seminar, internet or correspondence course). The remaining 8 CEs may be earned inself-directedsetting (activity related to the profession such as planning commissions, building code advisory boards, urban renewal boards, regulatory boards, etc.).
  • Renewal Date:  November 30 of even-numbered years.
  • CE Cycle:  Biennial - Credits must be earned within the 2 year cycle running from December 1 of even-numbered years through November 30 of the following even-numbered-year (i.e. December 1, 2020 though November 30, 2022 for the November 30, 2022 renewal).
  • Acceptable Coursework:  The Design Unit of the Illinois Division of Professional Regulation does not pre-approve courses. Courses approved by the AIA under the HSW designation are generally accepted. It is the licensee's responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and on Board's website. Final discretion is up to the Board.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Licensees are responsible for tracking courses and maintaining supporting documentation in case of an audit. Transcripts and other back-up information will not be accepted by the board, unless in case of audit. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Licensees are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 4 years following the renewal period for which the continuing education was taken.
  • Audit:  All architects licensed in Illinois are subject to audit by the Board and upon request will need to provide documentation to support continuing education claimed at renewal.
  • Carry-over credits:  Not allowed
