Alabama Interior Design Continuing Education Requirements

Registered Alabama interior designers are required to complete 10 hours of Continuing Education every year.
- CE Requirement: 10 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) annually, all of which must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) credits. At least 4 of the 10 CEUs must be related to codes and standards (i.e. ADA, ANSI, BOCA, ICC, LEED, etc).
- Renewal Date: September 30, every year.
- CE Cycle: Annual - Registrants are required to earn the continuing education in the year immediately preceding the renewal date (e.g. continuing education must be earned from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022 for the September 30, 2022 renewal).
- Acceptable Coursework: The Alabama Board for Registered Interior Designers does not pre-approve providers of continuing education. However, IDCEC- and AIA-approved courses are generally acceptable but it is the registrant's responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and as detailed on the Board's regulations. At least 4 of the 10 hours must be earned via in-person study (i.e. face-to-face seminars and presentations) and a maximum of 6 hours may be earned in self-directed setting (i.e. home study, online, correspondence, etc). Final discretion is up to the Board.
- Reporting of Credits: Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Alabama Board. Registrants are required to certify to the completion of the required continuing education. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
- Tracking of Credits: Registered Interior Designers are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 2 years from the renewal date for which they were claimed.
- Audit: All interior designers registered in Alabama are subject to audit by the Board and upon written request will need to provide documentation to support the credits claimed at renewal.
- Carry Over Credits: Not permitted.
