Interior Design and Architecture Continuing Education Requirements

Utah Architect License Renewal

Written by Cindy Grant | May 7, 2020 1:17:44 PM

Licensed Utah architects are required to complete 24 hours of Continuing Education every 2 years.

  • CE Requirement:  24 Continuing Education (CE) hours every 2 calender years, all hours must qualify as Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) subjects.
  • Renewal Date:  May 31 of even-numbered years (2022, 2024 etc.) If you do not possess the required amount of credits by this deadline, you will be required to complete double the number of hours missed for renewal. (I.g. if you missed 4 CE hours within the calendar year, you are required to obtain 4 additional CE hours - for a today of 8 CE hours - by the renewal deadline).
  • CE Reporting Cycle:  Biennial - Licensees are required to earn 12 HSW hours of continuing education each calendar year so that all 24 hours have been earned by December 31 of odd-numbered years in time for the next even-year renewal due on May 31. (e.g. hours of continuing education earned between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2021, count toward the May 31, 2022 renewal.)
  • Acceptable Coursework:  The Utah Board of Architecture does not pre-approve courses or providers. Courses approved by AIA under the HSW designation are generally acceptable. It is the licensee’s responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the criteria of the Board. Final discretion is up to the Board.
  • Reporting of CreditsProviders cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Utah Board. Licensees are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the biennial renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Licensed architects are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for 6 years from the date of completion.
  • Audit:  All architects licensed in Utah are subject to audit by the Board and upon request will need to provide documentation to support the CE hours claimed at renewal.
  • Carry-over Credits:  Not permitted.
