Interior Design and Architecture Continuing Education Requirements

North Carolina Architect License Renewal

Written by Micène Fontaine | Sep 25, 2018 10:00:00 AM
Licensed North Carolina architects are required to complete 12 hours of Continuing Education every calendar year. All 12 hours must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare.
  • CE Requirement:  12 Contact Hours (CHs) per calendar year, all of which must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) credits.
  • Renewal Date:  June 30 of every year.
  • CE Reporting Cycle:  Annual - Architects must earn the required credits in the calendar year preceding the license renewal. (i.e. credits earned between January 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, count towards for the June 30, 2022 renewal etc.).
  • Acceptable Coursework:  The North Carolina Board of Architecture does not pre-approve courses or providers of continuing education. Course approved by AIA are generally accepted. It is the licensee's responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and - most importantly - as detailed on Board's website.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Providers cannot report continuing education credits directly to the Board. Licensees are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the annual renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Members are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 6 years from date credits are claimed.
  • Audit:  All architects licensed in North Carolina are subject to audit by the Board and upon request will need to provide documentation to support the CHs claimed at renewal.
  • Carry Over: Not permitted.
