Interior Design and Architecture Continuing Education Requirements

New Jersey Architect License Renewal

Written by Cindy Grant | Jul 9, 2019 6:41:00 PM

Licensed New Jersey architects are required to complete 24 hours of Continuing Education every 2 years. 16 CE hours must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare topics.

  • CE Requirement:  24 Continuing Education (CE) hours every 2 years. Of which, at least 16 CE hours must qualify as Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) credits. No more than 6 CE hours may be earned in one calendar-day.
  • Renewal Date:  July 31 of odd-numbered years.
  • CE Reporting Cycle:  Credits must be earned between August 1 of odd-numbered years and July 31 of the next odd numbered year (for example, August 1, 2021 to July 31, 2023 for July 31, 2023 renewal).
  • Acceptable Coursework: The New Jersey State Board of Architects does not pre-approve courses or providers. AIA-approved courses are generally acceptable but it is the registrant's responsibility to use their professional judgment to determine if an activity meets the Board's criteria as summarized in this post and - most importantly - as detailed on Board's website. Final discretion is up to the board.
  • Reporting of CreditsProviders cannot report continuing education credits earned to the New Jersey Board. Licensees are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the biennial renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Records of successful completion of continuing education should be kept for at least 5 years following the license renewal for which credits were claimed.
  • Audit:  All architects licensed in New Jersey are subject to audit by the Board and upon written request will need to provide documentation to support the CE hours claimed at renewal.
  • Carry-over Credits:  A maximum of 12 CE hours, including up to 8 HSW CE hours may be carried over to the next renewal period as long as they were earned in the last six months of the renewal period.
