Interior Design and Architecture Continuing Education Requirements

Massachusetts Architect License Renewal

Written by Cindy Grant | Jul 12, 2021 2:34:52 PM

Registered Massachusetts architects are required to complete 12 hours of Continuing Education every year. All 12 CE hours must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare.

  • CE Requirement:  12 Continuing Education (CE) hours every year, all of which must qualify as Health, Safety & Welfare (HSW) credits.
  • Renewal Deadline:  August 31 of every year.
  • CE Reporting Cycle:  Annual - Architects must earn the required credits in the year preceding the license renewal (e.g. September 1, 2021  through August 31, 2022 for the August 31, 2022 renewal).
  • Acceptable Coursework: The Massachusetts Board of Registration of Architects does not pre-approve courses or providers. The Board automatically accepts courses approved by AIA under the HSW designationIt is up to the licensee to determine whether the activity meets the Board’s requirements and final discretion is up to the Board.
  • Reporting of Credits:  Providers cannot report continuing education credits earned to the Massachusetts Board. Licensees are required to attest that they are in compliance with the Board’s CE requirements on the annual renewal application. Design Arts Seminars reports credits electronically whenever possible.
  • Tracking of Credits:  Licensees are responsible for maintaining proof of successful completion of continuing education activities for at least 2 consecutive registration periods.
  • Audits:  All architects licensed in Massachusetts are subject to audit by the Board and upon request will need to provide documentation to support the CE hours claimed at renewal.
  • Carry-Over: Not permitted.
